ACHILLES TENDON RECONSTRUCTION
What is an Achilles reconstruction?
Achilles reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to treat, repair and reconstruct a torn Achilles tendon situated in the ankle. An Achilles tendon is a strong fibrous cord in the lower leg. This tendon connects the muscles of the calf to the heels and aids in walking, running and jumping.
When the Achilles tendon tears or ruptures, this may be caused by a sudden, strong force on the ankle due to overuse or an accident. A ruptured Achilles tendon may cause symptoms such as pain, swelling and weakness of the ankle.
When is an Achilles reconstruction recommended?
Achilles reconstruction is required if you have torn the tendon or it has ruptured. The surgery also be recommended if you are diagnosed with tendinopathy or if conservative treatments such as pain medication and a temporary cast have failed to treat the condition.
Tendinopathy is a tendon disorder which refers to a breakdown of collagen in a tendon. This may cause pain, accompanied by a burning sensation and reduced flexibility and range of motion.
What does an Achilles reconstruction entail?
An Achilles reconstruction procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Dr Gräbe will make an incision on your calf. The orthopaedic surgeon will then make an incision through the sheath of the tendon and remove portions of the damaged tendon or repair the rupture in the tendon.
Another tendon may be removed from your foot and used to replace a portion of or the entire Achilles tendon. Other repairs may also be done if required. After the procedure, the incisions will be stitched closed.
