TRIPLE ARTHRODESIS

What is a triple arthrodesis?

A triple arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that involves fusing three joints in the hindfoot. The hindfoot consists of the talocalcaneal, talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints. These joints help the foot move from side to side.

When is a triple arthrodesis recommended?

A triple arthrodesis is performed to help relieve pain in the hindfoot as well as correct deformities that may be present in the hindfoot. These deformities can be by caused by serious injury, severe arthritis or a genetic effect. This procedure may also be recommended for the following conditions:

  • Severe flatfoot
  • Abnormal connections between the bones
  • High arches
  • Joint instability ---- caused by neuromuscular disease.

Tripple arthrodesis surgery may also be indicated when conservative treatment such as bracing and anti-inflammatory medications do not work. This procedure may help improve stability, allowing for easier standing and walking.

What does a triple arthrodesis surgery entail?

During the triple arthrodesis surgery, general anaesthesia will be administered to ensure that you don't feel any pain during the procedure. The affected area will be cleaned and sterilized, then an incision will be made below the ankle, and another one will be made inside the ankle.

After the underlying joints have been exposed, the orthopaedic surgeon will examine them and then remove the cartilage in between the joints. He will then prepare for fusion, by preparing a bone graft from other bones such as the iliac crest and proximal tibia. Dr Gräbe will then insert the bone graft in the joint and secure it with the use of screws, staples or plates, which will stabilize the bone joints and correct the hindfoot to a neutral position. The incisions will then be stitched closed, and the bone graft will allow the bones to gradually fuse together over time.
