TOTAL ANKLE REPLACEMENT
What is total ankle replacement surgery?
Ankle replacement surgery is a surgical procedure done to replace a damaged ankle joint with an artificial implant. The ankle joint, also called the tibiotalar joint, is where the tibia rests on top of the talus. Arthritis may affect the ankle joint as well as other joints in the foot, resulting in the cartilage wearing off. This may cause pain, inflammation and swelling of the joint. Ankle replacement is performed to eliminate pain and swelling in the ankle joint.
When is a total ankle replacement surgery recommended?
Ankle replacement surgery may be recommended if your ankle arthritis has progressed to a severe stage, causing symptoms such as severe pain, inflammation, and stiffness. This may lead to difficulties with walking.
There are different types of ankle arthritis, namely:
- Osteoarthritis: This is a type of arthritis which results in the wear and tear of the protective cartilage in between the bones. Osteoarthritis is common in older adults.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: This is an autoimmune disease which affects the joints. This may cause symptoms such as joint stiffness, fatigue, fever, and tender, warm, swollen joints.
Dr Gräbe may also recommend ankle replacement if conservative treatment such as pain medication, physical therapy and corticosteroid injections have been exhausted.
What does total ankle replacement surgery entail?
This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia combined with a nerve block. Dr Chris Gräbe will make an incision on your ankle to help access the damaged area. He will then remove the damaged portions of the shinbone and talus, then replace the damaged pieces with metal joint surfaces.
Plastic is inserted between the metal joint in order for the new joint to glide smoothly and easily. Other repairs may also be done during the procedure. Afterwards, the incision will be stitched closed.
